    Is there anything to look for? How does one determine that it is "unlocked"?

    plug it into your truck before you buy it, if it says the VIN is locked, or something to that effect, don't buy it until the owner unlocks it with the vehicle it's coded to. If you're buying it used over the internet, the ol' "buyer beware" adage becomes the ruling factor. just my $. 02
