Looking for some advice.. I have had two diesel shops tell me I need to flush my oil system with a chemical to clean out all the gunk built up in the oil pan and engine.. My truck is a 2005, 3500 5.9 with 146000 miles.. Has anyone else had this done ?? I'm not sure if they are trying to generate work or this is something that really needs to be done... Any suggestion ??

If you're using a good brand engine oil with the proper detergents and changing it regularly there shouldn't be any gunk built up in the engine. I'd insist on actual evidence of gunk build up before I would consider such a move. And even then, I'm not sure I would do it.

This is a money maker for the shop. When I worked at dealerships, the would have an oil package, fuel package and trans package. Like @User113 has stated, good oil and changing it on a regular schedule, it's not needed. The occasional fuel treatment (Power Service) would be the only thing needed due to the fuel inconsistency found between stations. Good oil ,fuel and enjoy the drive! :D

Do you use good oil and change it regularly?

Thanks for the information. I have always used the premium blue oil from the cummins distributor in Portland and change the oil and filter every 4500 miles.. I was skeptical of this offer but when two different shops wanted to do the same thing I thought I had better ask around.. appreciate the input.

That’s a good oil, and you change it more often than needed (unless it ages out). I wouldn’t do anything different.

I see your in Vancouver WA, since I moved to the the west coast aka Portland Oregon area 5 years ago what you were told seems to be one of the many BS sales pitches they try to push on people and its just not Ram who tries that line of BS on people...

Oil flush, trans flush, intake cleaner, injector cleaner... the only one worthwhile IMHO is the brake system flush.

I had the brake flush suggested to me on wife then 2 year old vehicle, I asked if they found water or some contamination in the reservoir, was told no its suggested to be done every 24 months in the Pacific Northwest, I asked if they had looked at the license plates on the car, they said no, I said you should being it's from IA, once it dawned on them what I told them the service writer agreed it was not needed nor was it even listed to be done in owners manual at 24 months, I wonder how many people fall for that line of BS of being told you need to flush brake system for a low price of $250.00 every 2 years

I do my brakes at 5 years and relube the slides on the calipers at the same time. Last time. on my former 09 Ram 4500, dealer charged me $25/caliper to regrease them and $125 for the brake system flush and fluid replacement. Getting ready to have them do it on my Ram 5500.
