2019 2500 Anti-Spin diff type?

Hi Guys - Did the 2019 2500s with 68RFE go back to a clutch-style limited slip if you ordered the anti-spin? I'm finally about to change out the factory gear oil to Amsoil Severe Gear at 16,000 and am not certain whether I absolutely need limited slip additive - I have heard that it was not needed with the geared-style anti-spins. I just want to have everything on hand before doing the job, and figure I might as well use the Amsoil additive if required since I'm using their gear oil - no compatibility worries.

Yes it did, one of only a couple things I think changed for the worse.

Amsoil says you don’t always need the additive, but the owners manual says it is required.

It’s not standard on any 2500, even with the off-road package, so verify your truck has the option on the window sticker.

Edit: Oh, yes, John, i wouldn't have dreamed of buying a truck without at least a limited slip/anti-spin rear. I was just bummed that Ram hadn't gotten around to offering an E-locker on Cummins 2500s. I don't rock crawl but I do sometimes get onto some soft stuff or the occasional washout area on a fire road.

Just to be clear. If you have an open diff, then yes, adding friction modifier won't hurt anything. If you do have the limited slip and your gear lube has it included, then you don't want to add extra.

 

Amsoil doesn't claim that their Severe Gear includes a limited slip friction modifier - just that it doesn't need one. Then they go on to say that all trucks are different and sometimes clutch packs chatter... Since the owner's manual says add a LS additive, I'll add the Amsoil stuff along with their gear oil...

 

Last time I shopped for Diff oil i had quite a hard time to find one WITHOUT additives. It seemed to me that they put it into every oil aside from the very basic mineral oils, which i didn't want.

NOTE: AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes do not require this additive. However, not all differentials respond the same and the addition of AMSOIL Slip Lock will eliminate chatter in mechanically sound differentials.

I would probably be inclined to try it without first.

 

I changed out both mine and my wife's trucks to Amsoil in the differentials. Didn't use the extra additive in either one, have had zero issues. Things sound and work normally.

 

I was talking to Tech at AMZ/OIL when I was inquiring about my new to me 01 Sport 2500 4wd. They said not to waste my money and just use the SevereGear 75-90. Been running that lube for three years and 30k with no issues without the SlipLoc.

Helical gear style (your truck) won’t ever need the additional additive. Not sure what they put in the 1500’s thou.

 

Hi all, This forum made me start wondering which limited slip is in the 2022?

 

It will be an 11.5” AAM Trac-Rite clutch plate LSD for an SO and the same thing but 12.0” for the HO.

 

The 4th gen 1500's use a 9.25 inch ZF differential on the back end. Not sure on the front end size, but it is ZF as well. Both have a drain plug integrated into the case so I didn't pop the cover when I changed them out. Oil was nasty looking but didn't get any chunks coming out. What I thought was interesting is the rear end in the 1500 calls for 75w-140 instead of the 75w-90. I figured it would call for lighter weight oil.

 

1500’s using 75w-140 isn’t uncommon. High hp motors and small rear ends need more protection.
