What is the solution when you reach the adjustment limit on the first gear? How will I know when a rebuild is needed.

Do you mean the front band adjusting screw?

If so, band replacement is the solution.

If the front band adjusting screw has reached it's limit and the transmission is having trouble properly shifting into second gear, then it's time for a rebuild.
