Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Waste gate is seized

the turbos waste gate on My factory stock 01 ram Diesel 3500 with an auto transmission, is seized, or so the shop says. The truck has 112000 original miles, so it has sat around, the truck starts and accelerates smoothly, but when climbing hills, it looses power. The shop has checked the fuel system and other checks and has determined that the turbos waste gate is seized up. The over boost faults are also logged.The turbo is a holeset. My question is, can the waste gate be replaced? our is a new turbo in order?

 

I have a similar problem on hills in my '01 2500 Quad cab. I would be interested to hear some replies from others.

 

Are they saying the waste gate is seized open or closed? If it is seized closed I can't see why you would be loosing power on the hills. Have you run or do you have a boost gauge? Check the rubber connector hoses between all of the hard pipes from the turbo to the inter cooler to the engine.

The shop is saying that the waste gate is seized closed, that why I get the over boost code, which is de-rating the power. They ran a test on the fuel pressures they said there's 5 pounds after the fuel filter, the mechanic says that's enough..?

 

If that is at idle that is too low,it will go down on a heavy pull,but it will not cause your overboost.

 

What fuel pressure should it have at idle? The fuel pumps is in the tank so sounds like I'll be changing the fuel pump any recommendations on a new pump ? Ive been thinking about getting a sump set up to put in the bottom of the tank, any recommendations there ?

 

Test it under load while driving before doing anything

 

A new fuel transfer pump will give 16 psi at idle, a worn out one about 5-8 psi at idle. I suggest installing a boost gauge to see what boost level you are really getting.

 

I'm with Joe. Install a boost gauge and a fuel pressure gauge. Then you will know to start with fixing it.

Thank you, I live in Preston Idaho, I don't know much about Cummings Diesel engines, or any Diesel engines for that matter. I will get those gauges and go from there.

 

Get a comp box, they have a boost fooler built in. Clamp that wastegate shut. Mines clamped shut i can do about 35psi on the stock turbo. No power problems on hills!!

 

5 psi way too low. Your may need a injection pump soon. Search lift pump psi. You will learn quickly how important it is and how to fix it
