Load Trail Gooseneck Dump Time.

That's what I get for having a "small" truck. When I passed through Texas I was within 160 miles of this tractor but had to make another trip to haul it (1400 miles) I do like a little extra tow vehicle weight for the traction. When I stopped in Brownfield, Texas for the night it was 91*, then the next day about noon I was in 2" of slushy snow as I passed over the Continental Divide in New Mexico.

Looking into a Goose neck Dump of our own, any advice? Have looked at PJ & Big tex. Not really excited about Big tex after owning a Goose neck flat from them.

 

I've had good luck with my PJ. It's a 14 ft GN dump that I upgraded with 8K, oil bath axles. That means 3-3/8x12 brakes, 17.5 rubber and an 18,500 gross. If you no longer have a cdl the factory will derating that combo to whatever you want. I tow it approx 100 days a year. The 17.5 rubber wears like iron compared to 16 inch. It tows straight and true. My only complaint is the powder coat peeling. As I understand it, the factory has addressed this problem.

 

Would like to have tie-downs and be able to load my ford tractor approx 2500 lbs say 3000lbs with the bucket.

 

My PJ has a tie down in each corner, bottom of each side. Obviously you don't need the gross I do. I'm good for about 14,000 pay load. You'll have to ask how light they build their GN trailers. Back when I bought mine the lightest was 14K.

 

I have a 14'/14k Big Tex bumper pull and a 16'/14k Load Trail gooseneck and like them both. The one thing about the Big Tex that I don't like is the 12 gauge floor, it will bow between the cross members with a wheeled vehicle. So far the 10 gauge Load Trail is fine. They both have tie downs. I think they all have their pros and cons. It can boil down to the dealers, some cheap out on the options so they can sell cheaper. I like the dealer in Texas that I go to because he gets all the options, like spare, tarp kit, ramps and full width tool box, plus I like Texas and don't mind the drive at all.

I would go with the 14K in the length you need. It seems like you always need the capacity of larger than you think.

PS: Also keep in mind the size of the bed v/s the size of the vehicle you haul. The tie downs are hard to use/access if there is no room to crawl around. With my Bobcat I tie to the ROPS with straps and hook to the bottom of the stake pockets outside the bed. It is so big it covers up the tie downs inside.

I really dig that 1st Gen.

I love having 4 seasons and the climate we have here 90% of the time....But the road treatment BS they put down 4-5 months out of the year oughta be outlawed. You just don't see older working trucks like that anymore. If they're around it's because they're somebody's​ garage Queen.

 

I had a 93. The last time it was rust free was 95.

 

The dry climate is easy on equipment. My '01 is at 303k miles with an all original front end, never been on an alignment rack. The '91 did get new ball joints, front springs and brake rotors at about 315k, the tie rods are original.

Well, I have the tub grinder up and running really well. After some false starts and a lot of modification, the end result is great. With a 16"x42" hammer mill with 64 hammers, it is like a tornado when I dump into the tub so I had to build a shield over the back half and change the feed system in the tub. Twice I have heard a loud bang and found two horse shoes destroyed about a 100' from the machine, I always load from the safe side however, I did get a fat lip from a chunk of something. I have to be careful when I dump, the bucket angle can cause a ricochet affect towards me. I also can only grind on days we get a south or south west wind. Due to yard logistics, fence, trees, fire wood, log decks and poop piles everywhere I can't grind any other direction.

Maybe you need a feed conveyor so you can keep your distance???

 

Good idea! I used to have one when I had a wood processor that was 20', portable, with a small gas motor. I will watch the local ads. Maybe I can fashion a visor off the ROPS canopy out of heavy plexiglass or at the vary least a face shield.

Nope, one of the kids at our 1 room county school tried it and said it was no dam good Trust me, we pretty much tried it all as kids. Our default tobacco when we were out, was pencil shavings, lead and all Since town was rare and even when we did get to go, the nickel for a sack of Bull Durham was hard to come by. After a country dance we were in hog heaven with all the butts for the taking Since I grew up in the "420" era it is rare but I can say I have never tried it and never will.

After some experienced haulers recommendations on another thread I bought an equalizer hitch for my dump trailer, 1500/15000 Kurt. I am going to like it. I hauled 2 light loads (6-7k net) and a heavy one (12k net) today and really no difference between the three. Almost felt like a gooseneck, no porpoising at all. I am looking forward to hauling my Bobcat, it is heavy and too long to adjust the weight so you end up hitch heavy.

That's what I wanted to do after towing my GN dump, but with the small 1/4 acre homesites I deliver to, a GN won't fit. With the GN I can pull out of the Cinder Pit with 7-8 yards in 4x2, with the bumper pull I need 4x4.
